Welcome to the U.S.-India Business Council’s 41st Annual Leadership Summit in what promises to be a display of the exceptional bond between the two countries. The Council’s Annual Leadership Summit has become an institution, assembling senior Indian and American leaders from the public and private sectors, who are committed to advancing the U.S.-India commercial and strategic partnership. The purpose of this gathering has been to chart the way forward and strengthen the bonds of U.S.-India enterprise, commercial opportunity, and friendship. This year’s Summit holds special significance as the Council will have the opportunity to host the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, as the guest of honor for the Summit.
We will also honor business leaders who have shaped the U.S.-India trade landscape. Prime Minister Modi’s visit comes at a historical time in U.S.-India ties. With a major transition occurring in the U.S. government, the relationship holds endless strategic and commercial prospects for the 45th President of the United States. The symbolism of his upcoming visit to Washington DC, where he will address a joint meeting of the United States Congress, informs the world that the U.S. and India are forging a deep partnership of economic and geopolitical significance. Prime Minister Modi will join the league of eminent global leaders who have addressed the U.S. Congress in the past such as Winston Churchill, Shimon Peres, Angela Merkel and A.B. Vajpayee. This is the first joint meeting by an Indian leader in a decade and the first in Paul D. Ryan’s speakership—a clarion call that relations between the world’s oldest and largest democracies are stronger, more significant and more critical for the global economy than ever before.

The Annual Leadership Summit is the Council’s signature event, drawing top business and government leaders and serves as a forum for engaging in discussions on U.S.-India commercial ties. The Prime Minister’s address will be on June 7th, ahead of his address to the Joint Session of the U.S. Congress. The Council also honors business and government leaders for their commitment to building a more inclusive global economy. Past honorees include: Ratan Tata (Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons), Indra Nooyi (CEO and Chairperson, PepsiCo) and Hillary Clinton (67th United States Secretary of State). In keeping with the annual award tradition, this year’s honorees for the Global Leadership Award are Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, and Founder and Managing Director of Sun Pharmaceuticals Dilip Shanghvi.
“Jeff and Dilip are two leaders that are shaping the U.S.-India trade ties with their incredible business acumen in this competitive space and have made a lasting impression in integrating India into the global economy,” said Dr. Aghi. “We couldn’t think of more qualified icons that are emblematic of the possibilities of our trade relationship.
