There are numerous opportunities for U.S. companies in all aspects of India's energy sector, including nuclear technology transfer, power generation, oil and gas exploration, renewable energy, project finance, and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services.

PRIORITIES

USIBC's Energy, Environment, and Enterprise (EEE) Executive Committee seeks to translate this extensive potential into investment opportunities by addressing the following advocacy priorities:

  • Civil Nuclear Trade: Advocate for the full implementation of the U.S.-India civil nuclear agreement. USIBC welcomes India's commitment to ratify the Convention on Supplementary Compensation and address concerns regarding nuclear liability.
  • Upstream and Downstream: Continue to promote India's procurement of U.S. technology, equipment, parts, and services for upstream, mid-stream, and downstream energy and power generation. Advocate for market-based pricing for retail gasoline, natural gas, and diesel fuel.
  • Solar Energy: Oppose local content requirements (LCRs) in India's National Solar Mission. LCRs will inhibit India from receiving the best technology possible to develop a globally competitive solar industry.
  • Project Finance: Familiarize lenders with the risk mitigation tools necessary for non-recourse project financing for renewable energy projects.
  • Intellectual Property Protection: Oppose compulsory licensing of clean technology in order to promote continued innovation.

ACTION

In order to make progress on the priorities outlined above, the EEE Executive Committee regularly hosts roundtables and other meetings with relevant senior U.S. and Indian government officials, submits policy recommendations, and provides strategic advisory services on navigating the complexities of the Indian energy sector.
